2010 OCA SACRAMENTO ESSAY WRITING CONTEST What three changes would you propose to our health care system, and how would it benefit the Asian American Pacific Islanders community?
Background:OCA is national organization dedicated to advancing the social, political, and economic well-being of Asian American Pacific Islanders in the United States.
OCA Sacramento is hosting the 2010 Dragon Boat Festival: Celebrating 15 years of Commitment, Service, and Advocacy to our Diverse Community,b and OCA is having an essay writing contest for future leaders like you.
Prizes for each age group:
1st Category: Ages 16 to 18
First Place: $500 Second Place: $250
2nd Category: Ages13 to 15
First Place:$400 Second Place: $200
3rd Category: Ages 9 to 14
First Place: $300 Second Place:$150
4th Category: Ages 5 to 8
First Place: $200
Second Place: $100
Who can enter the Essay Writing Contest? Candidates must reside within the Greater Sacramento Metropolitan Area: Sacramento, Yolo, Placer, Yuba, Sutter, El Dorado, and San Joaquin counties. In addition, applicants must meet age requirements between 5 to 18 years of age.
 What are the Essay Writing Contest Rules?
For 5 to 8 Years of Age: Submit an essay writing of 100 words or more describing the three changes you would propose in regards to our health care system, and how are we going to benefit from it.
For 9 to 12 Years of Age: Submit an essay writing of 200 words or more describing the three changes you would propose in regards to our health care system, and how are we going to benefit
from it.
For 13 to 15 Years of Age: Submit an essay writing of 300 words or more describing the three changes you would propose in regards to our health care system, and how are we going
to benefit from it.
For 16 to 18 Years of Age: Submit an essay writing of 500 words or more describing the three changes you would propose in regards to our health care system, and how are we going to benefit from it.
All candidates must submit the essay writing in English language (hand written or type);
Candidates must write their names, age, and contact number
(mailing address, email and phone numbers) on the upper right hand corner of your paper.
How will your Essay Writing be judged?
A panel of judges will evaluate the essays as follows:
1.Relevance to the topic = 70%
2.Creativity= 20%
3.Grammar = 10%

(When emailing the essay entry, please title the subject OCA Essay Entry). Essay must be received no later than April 25th, 2010 at 5:00 PM.
All winners* will be notified by phone a week before the event, and will be awarded on May 1st, 2010, Saturday during the dinner program of the Dragon Boat Festival which is held at the Double Tree Hotel located at 2001 Point West Way,
Sacramento, CA 95815.
*NOTE: Winners MUST be present to receive their award. Otherwise, the award is forfeited.

The Sacramento Youth Commission currently has several open seats!
The Sacramento Youth Commission is comprised of 22 youth appointed by Mayor Johnson and the Sacramento City Council, and serves as an advisory board to provide recommendations on youth related issues in Sacramento.Participating on the commission is an exciting way for youth to have a voice in local decision making. Commissioners receive a $50 stipend per month for their participation.

Сurrently, applications are being accepted to fill open Youth Commission seats.
Applicants must be between 14-19 years old , must reside or attend school within the Sacramento City limits and must have interest in advocating for Sacramento youth.

Youth at City Council Program!
The Youth @ City Council program provides an opportunity for youth to be introduced to the role of local government, City Council procedures, and how they impact our day to day lives. It’s also a way to engage youth in the process, encouraging them to consider the impact youth have on our communities and to further explore opportunities for their involvement.
Youth attend one orientation/ training and volunteer during a minimum of City Council meeting. Volunteer hours are eligible for school community service credits.
